If you are an organizer or simply a member of a Terry Pratchett appreciation group, be it literary, dramatic or operatic, and would like your group's details posted here, please get in touch.

I notice , with despair, that the northern counties seem to appreciate Terry's works but always seem a bit shy about meeting up with others to share their enjoyment.

Come on guys, We're supposed to be the friendliest area of the country.  Let's share our collective enjoyment with others and spread the word.

If you don't know the email address by now, click HERE and get in touch.

Other Northern Pratchett groups and societies...

Could this be Constable Downspout performing his duties on the rooftops?

If you have to ask the question, "Who?", you definitely need a large dose of Pratchett to get you started..

For residents of York, help will soon be available in the form of a brand new Discworld group which is being formed by one of his Yorkshire fans.  Details can be obtained if you send a clacks to Heather at wozzy36@yahoo.co.uk

Any Discworld fans are more than welcome to go along.

Remember - If you don't ask, you'll never know.

Personal Friend

I can finally include a link to a good mate's site, Matthew Keggan-Phipps from Telford.  A great bloke even though he is a 'southerner'.  Matt plays just about anything with a reed and has suffered nine years of outright sarcasm towards his beloved saxaphone. An instrument I still describe as 'An ill wind that nobody blows any good!'  Still, despite the friendly rivalry between our two traditional sources of music, we have survived and produced some interesting works to throw at each other.  Amongst other things, Matt is currently bringing together a group of musicians to apply a new sound to 14th and 15th century music.  Folk fusion is how he describes it.  Sounds like an interesting concept.  Pay him a visit sometime, by clicking on his photograph.

Regular visits are recommended as this is a new site and still being developed and added to.

George Gladstone

It's very rare nowadays to find a music store selling much more than guitars, drum kits and their relevant spare bits and pieces.  I discovered this positive gold mine during a trip to Darlington, tucked away about 5 minutes walk from the main shopping area and quite near the Railway Station.

It is a shop for musicians, run by musicians.  A warm welcome from the sales staff and an immediate interest in your requirements ranks high in my opinion.  When this is followed up by being able to make an immediate purchase from several stock items covering a varied price range, I'm more than impressed.

A pleasant change from the normal..."Well, we can order it for you, but it might take a few *days."

(*Often meaning a few weeks)

The sign outside says Woodwind, Brass, Repairs and Sales but inside it is well stocked with many other stringed instruments and keyboards together with a large choice of strings, reeds, mouthpieces and spare parts etc... Sorry, I forgot to mention the sheet music.

The team are members of NAMIR (National Association of Musical Instrument Repairers) and have been taking pride in their services to students and professionals since 1984.

But don't take my word for any of this... Click the link at the top of this box and discover for yourself excellent prices with aftercare, exceptional service, specialist knowledge and a fast mail order service to have your purchases to your door in the minimum of time.

Market Music

Centrally situated in Durham's Indoor Market, this is a gold mine for the folk and country player.  John Oxley is the man to meet and he will supply you with just about anything musical in the shortest possible time.  Although he mainly deals with the guitar scene and is himself the owner of a lot of classic designs from the past 50-60 years, his knowledge is widespread across a whole selection of instruments.  He may be known to more people than can remember him simply by being a regular at meetings and gatherings up and down the country.

John has impressed his expanding customer base with his new web site that contains even more instruments, including STAR Buys and a used instrument section plus many accessories and useful links to tutors, repairers and entertainers.

Dance sides

Tyne Bridge Morris

A great crowd of people who put a lot of energy into their performances of Clog Morris.  Your first contact will almost certainly be with Bren, a charming lady with a cracking sense of humour, which isn't a bad thing considering her Welsh ancestry.  How could anyone in Wales be happy when the pubs close from Saturday evening until the following Monday?  Their musicians are a well seasoned crowd and regularly keep the crowds entertained with songs and local folk tunes when the dancers are having a rest.  If you want something apart from Cotswold Morris for your function, give them a call.

Retailers

Anglers Services (Hartlepool) Ltd.

Two mentions for the price of one. If fishing is your way to relax, you will obviously need to buy your tackle somewhere.  I suggest either the Durham or Hartlepool branches of Anglers Services. Run by fishermen, for fishermen... you will be immediately welcomed into the friendly inner circle of piscerian skills together with the associated stories, news, gossip and, not forgetting, a wide range of supplies and equipment relevant to your sport.

It's well worth paying these guys a visit at either :

11, High St North, Langley Moor, Durham       Tel: 0191 3784050  or

27, Park Rd, Hartlepool, Cleveland                   Tel: 01429 274844

Around fifty years of continuous service to the angling community is as good an advert these guys need.  Pictured above left is Mark, the son of my old friend and fishing companion Peter 'Pip' Arrowsmith, who is now running the business so the 'old man' can get out and enjoy himself a little bit more.

If you click the picture you will get a better view of the range of stuff they carry, just don't be distracted by the clowning around in front of the phone-cam.  On the other hand, the banning of lead in fishing weights may have come too late! - Who knows?

Retailers

Geoff Holter Accordions

Based at Unit 22, Whessoe Road, Darlington this shop and workshop is a useful place to have only 20 miles away from home.  Geoff is a practiced hand at repairs of squeeze boxes and has a formidable stock of brand new and re-conditioned models available to the beginner or discerning professional player.   Geoff is a true craftsman who originally worked for Hohner, so he knows more than 'a little bit' about his skills.  Browse through his large stock including accessories such as  straps, music, amps and even MIDI accessories and any box player will think they've died and gone to Heaven.  If you're looking for a new or second, third or even fourth instrument, this is your starting point.

Retailers

Northumberland Cheese Company

A great find we discovered when out for a drive.  Twenty minutes or so north'ish from Newcastle this is factory and shop in one location.  A cheese lover's delight and they're all north-eastern recipes.  Cow's, sheep and goat's milk is turned into some of the best cheeses I've tasted.  If you want convincing, visit them and try a few samples.  You'll end up in the tea-room waiting impatiently for one of their farmhouse dishes using their own cheese.  Interesting just to see the process if you're a calorie counter.
